Women in construction want their slice of the pie and they now have the backing of the department of Human Settlements.
It says it will hold provinces accountable if they fail to give 30% of their housing projects to women owned companies.
The department met women in construction in East London to assess the progress made with including them in the sector.
Construction remains male dominated sector.
A lack of financial support and properly trained professionals contribute to the low numbers of women in this field.
Preliminary findings show that Limpopo and the Northern Cape have exceeded the 30% benchmark set by the department of human settlements.
A mechanism to monitor non-compliance is being developed.
Human Settlements Minister Nomaindia Mfeketho says:”What we seeking to do here is to give tools that we can put in place so that they can enforce the consciousness so that women can get that 30% or even more.”
Women working in the construction industry have also appealed to the government to clarify how they will benefit from the envisaged land distribution program.
