Lulu Mlangeni’s new dance piece “Confined” which is inspired by the life political stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is currently on at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.

This piece celebrates women who have endured discrimination, hardships in their lives and is performed by one of South Africa’s most renowned dancers Sonnyboy Motau.

Confined also features the Vuyani Dance Company dancers as well as popular acappella group Complete.

Mlangeni says Madikizela-Mandela’s book “491 Days”, conversations with different women and some of her own life experiences pushed her to write the book.

“We will be tackling social violence, patriarchy, power and dominion. Although we tackle such issues, I only discovered yesterday after the play that we are also dealing with men who are going through abuse and keep it to themselves, so our production is about everyone.”
