Williams urges the nation to rally behind Bafana Bafana

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bafana Bafana’s No.1 goalkeeper at the 2019 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament that is currently underway in Egypt, Ronwen Williams is urging the nation to rally behind the team ahead of the crunch quarterfinal against Nigeria on Wednesday.

The two teams will meet at the Cairo International Stadium in a game that will kick-off at 21:00.

This follows Bafana’s sensational 1-0 win over tournament favourites hosts Egypt on Saturday and the Super Eagles’ powerful comeback victory over arch-rivals Cameroon on the same day.

Bafana’s result comes on the back of some poor performances in the group stages which resulted in serious criticism from back home.

Williams is now pleading with South Africans to support this team.

Reflecting on the historic win from this past weekend where they beat an Egyptian team that was unbeaten in the tournament and had kept three clean sheets in the group stages, Williams has credited Head Coach Stuart Baxter for the tactical masterclass.

Bafana lost to Ivory Coast and Morocco and only beat Namibia in the group stages.

Williams says the lack of warm-up matches contributed to this slow start as they only had a training match behind closed doors against Ghana in Dubai.

A lot of questions were asked when Baxter decided to go with Darren Keet in the second game against Namibia. This raised some eyebrows because Williams was Bafana’s best played in that 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast.

But the SuperSport United goalkeeper says all had been explained before.

PSL Footballer of the Season and Orlando Pirates star attacker Thembinkosi Lorch was the hero on Saturday after scoring the winning goal in the 85th minute to shock the hosts.

Williams, who is also the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season says Lorch didn’t even need to be psyched up before this game.
