Willemse’s lawyers call for probe into racism at SuperSport

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Ashwin Willemse‘s lawyer, Nqobizitha Mlilo says they had hoped for a thorough investigation of racism at TV channel, SuperSport. This as an independent inquiry into the Willemse saga at SuperSport led by advocate Vincent Maleka has found that there was no racism aspect in the incident involving three former Springboks.

Willemse had walked off set during a live panel discussion on SuperSport last month, after accusing his co-presenters, Nick Mallet and Naas Botha of patronising him.

The 50 page report was released on Tuesday without Willemse side of the story. Mlilo says the issue of racism has been happening for a long time, but SuperSport did nothing to resolve it.

“The issue in question is not only on the day. The parties involved have been at each other for some time and he has raised his concerns with SuperSport and it has not acted on it. And on the day he persisted that these two gentlemen were racist. They refer his issue to Maleka.

“We had already expressed his view that he regarded a contact of these two panellists as racist. So we took issue that the forum headed by Maleka cannot have legal standing. The entire report is based on a report that is untested and evidence that is unchallenge,”Mlilo explained.
