Reading Time: < 1 minute

Western Cape traffic officials have issued fines valued at R 198 000 to more than 50 speedsters across the province since the start of the weekend.

The province’s traffic officials hold weekly roadblocks on major roads where they test the speed of thousands of vehicles, check for un-roadworthy vehicles and drunk drivers.

Seven people have so far been arrested on the province’s roads, six of them for drunk driving.

Provincial Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa says, “We also tested the speed of several motor vehicles and prosecuted 54 drivers for exceeding the different speed limits. The highest speed recorded in the Western Cape Province was in Mossel Bay. The driver of a vehicle did 160 km/h in a 120 zone. Another driver, also in Mossel Bay, did 130 km/h in a 100 zone.”
