Water shortage a great challenge in North West province

Reading Time: < 1 minute

It has been six weeks since the residents of Bapong village near Gelukspan in the North West have had water.

The infrastructure provided by the district municipality is not functioning, forcing them to buy water from neighbouring communities.

The 12 000 litre water tank serves no purpose as there is no diesel for the generator to pump water into it.

Residents are frustrated.

“We are dying of thirst. We want to know where our municipal budget goes to, because they’ve been giving us diesel. Where is it going now?”

The Ngaka Modiri Molema District municipality blames this debacle on a lack of communication between a community member who was appointed to monitor and order the diesel.

Councillor Gilbert Mathakathaka MMC for infrastructure says:

“These pump operators, we receive them from the community meetings when we want one – so we are going to make the councillor to come and account, and on his account, he must just take the matter back to the community for the community to deal with such pump operator.

Forty litres of diesel were delivered to the village after SABC News alerted the authorities.
