Eighteen youngsters from the Western Cape will make history when they represent South Africa at the 16th Annual Hong Kong International Kung Fu Championships in March.

The squad will be led by their Shifu and coach MJ Li who returned from the 2016 Legends of Kung Fu World Champs with four gold medals.

After training hundreds of kids, he is down to 18 children who will make history in Hong Kong.

The students come from disadvantaged areas in Paarl, Wellington, Mitchells Plain, Langa and Gugulethu.

The squad will compete in Hong Kong along with 9000 athletes from 52 countries.

Kung Fu is a holistic art, not only a martial art. It enhances the spirit and leads to these young athletes becoming the best version of themselves.

Not only have the kids been hard at work, but together with parents and friends, fundraisers were held to raise funds for the trip to Hong Kong.

But three youngsters are still struggling to raise the necessary funds.

“I must commend a lot of the parents who have been working since September last year to raise funds. We have also raised funds collectively. I want to thank so many of the talented sons of Cape Town. Riaad Moosa, Marc Lottering, Emo Adams, Dalin Oliver have given up of their time. Three of my athletes are still experiencing difficulties in so far as raising funds are concerned,” says M.J Li.
