Reading Time: < 1 minute

The death toll on roads in the Western Cape has exceeded the 100 mark from the beginning of this month to date.

Traffic authorities have urged motorists to adhere to the rules of the road. Traffic volumes have settled somewhat with a number of cars, buses and taxis still arriving or leaving the Western Cape.

Last weekend, 24 000 vehicles were recorded passing the Huguenot Tunnel leaving Cape Town with 14 000 entering.

Provincial traffic authorities say driving behaviours remains a major concern.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa says, “The death toll has exceeded last year and stands at 114. That’s 114 too many deaths on the road. We don’t want any fatalities.”

Meanwhile, motorists travelling into Cape Town say roads are congested with a number of accidents along the way.

Melikhaya Msengana, a taxi driver, has cautioned other motorists: “Rather get out of the vehicle and rest. There are a lot of accidents.”

The number of pedestrian deaths are also alarming at 51 for the month to date.

Authorities say they will remain on high alert throughout the festive season.
