The Pro-Makhado Task Team in Limpopo has warned residents of Vuwani and surrounding villages against campaigning or participating in the upcoming elections, saying they will face serious consequences.

Since 2015, residents of Vuwani have been against the Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision to incorporate their area in the new Collins Chabane Local Municipality in the Vhembe District.

They say the Board did not conduct proper consultations. The area used to fall under the Makhado Local Municipality.

Speaking during a live radio election debate on SABC’s Phalaphala FM in Thohoyandou, Pro Makhado Task Team deputy chair Arnold Mulaudzi said there would be no elections in the area if the Board’s move was not reversed.

“We are doing everything within our powers to make sure that there won’t be any voting station that is open. There won’t be participation by anyone from one area, and we don’t expect anyone to defy.”

“Actually we have put an embargo on all activities of government and we are cautioning all political parties not to provoke the people of Vuwani, they are not interested. If you are interested to serve the people of Vuwani take them to Makhado.”

Meanwhile, during the debate representatives of the ANC, DA and EFF urged the people of Vuwani to participate in the elections and ignore the Pro-Makhado Task Team‘s threats.

Co-operative Governance, Traditional Leadership and Housing Jerry Ndou says the people should be allowed to vote as government is still dealing with the demarcation issue.

He says the only chance the people of Vuwani have is to apply for re-determination of boundaries to the Municipal Demarcation Board when the process re-opens in 2021.
