Some residents of Vuwani, in Limpopo, have told Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole that they will be voting on Wednesday.
This is despite a call by the Pro-Makhado Task Team for them to boycott the polls.
The group is still upset over government’s refusal to reincorporate the area into the Makhado Local Municipality.
However, some members of the community seem to have outgrown the anger and frustration.
“We are going to vote on Wednesday. We want to have our Venda President. We are very happy to see Commissioner Sitole in Vuwani. We are happy and ready to cast our vote. Want to vote for a party, which will bring changes in our locality. We are ready to vote. I don’t know about others. But as for me, I am ready to vote,” says one resident.
On Sunday, police used rubber bullets to disperse a meeting of the Pro-Makhado Task Team, which authorities say, was illegal.
The group was discussing a way forward with regards to the upcoming elections.
Commissioner Sitole says 84 000 police officers have been deployed to deal with elections countrywide.
The country’s top cop says he is happy with the state of readiness.
“In order to demonstrate our readiness for the elections nationally, we have actually deployed a total contingency of 51 000 police officers across the country, a total contingency of interventions which take this number to 84 000 across the country. The Defence Force will also be on standby to complement the creation of a safe and secured environment.”
