Vilakazi Street to host another community cycling event

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The celebrated Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, Soweto, will once again be a centre of attraction when another community building cycling event is held at this internationally acclaimed precinct on Saturday.

Saturday’s event will once again be hosted by up and coming Soweto-based Book Ibhoni, an up-and-coming Small, Medium & Micro Enterprise Businesses (SMMEs).

The event consists of professional cyclists coming together with upcoming cyclists to donate books and deliver them to community libraries and children’s orphanages.

Event’s founder Mpumelelo Mtintso says they accept all kinds of books, but their target is basic education books.

The campaign has been working with different libraries from various communities and with the help of Jabavu Library Centre which has the data-base of Johannesburg libraries.

The target beneficiary for this upcoming tour is the Home of the Hopeless in Mofolo and Orabile Crèche based in Jabavu.

Mtintso says the idea was inspired by the Fees Must Fall movement, after hearing side comments that students were using the campaign to miss exams.

He adds that he wanted to show that students were in fact encouraged by reading and invested in being a part of building a better country.

The 28-year-old Mtintso says community libraries and homes of the orphans and abandoned children are always in need of books and the response so far has been positive.
