Victim of Taxify metered-taxi feud laid to rest

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The 21-year-old Tshwane University of Technology student and Taxify driver was laid to rest in Inanda north of Durban on Sunday. Siyabonga Ngcobo‘s charred body was found in his burnt vehicle after he was set alight in Pretoria last week.

Ngcobo is the latest casualty of the ongoing war between metered taxi drivers, Uber and Taxify drivers.

Government says efforts to resolve the impasse must be stepped up.

“This is one of the gruesome and very barbaric acts which in our country we condemn in all the possible ways. That’s why we say the law must take its course because at the end of the day the taxi industry is expected to ferry our people,” says KZN Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda.

Siyabonga left KwaZulu-Natal two years ago to further his studies in Pretoria. To pay for his studies he opened a small business and also drove Taxify vehicles.

His family say they are still traumatized. They described him as hard worker.

Thembile Zwane a family member says: “We are traumatised by what happened to our child. He was a lovely boy, respectful and resourceful. He was not a criminal. Our loss is very great.”

“Siya was an ambitious person who knew what he wanted from life. He was peaceful and did not like violence. He had his entire life planned out ahead. He never liked messing about either. That’s the kind of person he was,” says his sister Nothando Mbonambi.

No arrests have been made so far.
