Veld fire in Cape Town now under control

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Firefighters have brought the veld fire that has been raging in the Du Toitskloof Mountains near Worcester (in the Boland) under control. However, about 50 firefighters will remain on the ground until it has been completely extinguished.

Cape Winelands District Deputy Director of Communications, Jo Anne Otto, says they are keeping a close eye on weather conditions, particularly the speed and direction of the wind.

The fire that broke out on Saturday has destroyed about 2 900 hectares of fynbos.

She says there are currently 50 firelighters on the scene.

“The situation at the moment is stable and the teams are making progress, but we are really hoping the wind won’t change direction and that it stays as calm as it is at the moment. So the fire is not under control yet, however our teams together with the Cape Nature teams are working tirelessly to bring it under control, but the fire is really high up in the mountains and at the moment it’s just really trying to keep it away from doing more damage.”
