Murderer Henri van Breda will appeal his conviction and sentence. Van Breda has been sentenced to three life terms in the High Court in Cape Town.
He killed his parents and older brother with an axe at their De Zalze Estate home in Stellenbosch in 2015.
Judge Siraj Desai also sentenced him to 15 years for the attempted murder of his sister, Marli, and 12 months imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice.
The sentences will run concurrently.
While handing down the sentence Judge Desai said that Van Breda’s conduct warrants a severe penalty.
“Each murderous attack upon a family member constitutes a very serious crime. These are or were premeditated murders and an attempted murder involving serious consequences. Society expects violent crimes to be evaluated with suffcient seriousness and stringent penalties to be imposed,” says Desai.
