Van Breda spends first night behind bars

Convicted murderer Henri van Breda has spent his first night in jail in the hospital section of the Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.

The city’s High court on Monday found 23-year old van Breda guilty of murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.

He axed his parents and older brother to death in their Stellenbosch home in January 2015. His younger sister Marli was seriously wounded in the attack.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazilila says credit for the guilty verdict must go to the prosecution and police who have worked on the case for three years.

Ntabazilila  says the police are always criticised of shoddy work but they have shown once again that when they get their hands in, they do a good job.

“We are coming back again on the 5th of June for sentencing procedures. The accused have been remanded to the hospital section of Pollsmoor but he will remain there on condition that he produces medical certificates which prove what he is ill of,” says Ntabazilila.
