University of Venda students ordered to vacate campus

The University of Venda management has ordered all students to vacate the campus by 12 o’clock Thursday afternoon.

Students have been protesting and demanding the payment of various allowances, including meals and books since Monday.

They have barricaded the main road to the campus with tree branches and rocks.

Police have retaliated by firing rubber bullets at the students.

University spokesperson Takalani Dzaga says lectures have been suspended until further notice.

He says: “Due to the fact that the situation was detoriorating, University management took a decision to suspend lectures. As a result all students have been informed to vacate the university campus by 12 o’clock this afternoon.”
