The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Mpumalanga says two IEC officials have been dismissed after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the province complained that a ballot box has been tampered with in Ermelo.

This after a member of the EFF took a video of the officials putting a ballot paper in an unsealed ballot box.

Provincial IEC spokesperson Sibusiso Nkosi says the two officials admitted that they did not follow proper procedures but dismissed that they were rigging votes.

“The area manager and the presiding officer concerned were both dismissed because according to their affidavits they did not follow the correct procedures. So according to them, they had no malicious intent. The ballot box has been quarantined so that at the beginning of counting it will be ascertained if the content of the ballot box will reflect as the same as it was expected. You must remember that with special votes we know who voted how many people voted and then which voting stations and specifically who were those people.”
