Two arrested for illegal firearms and ammunition

Two suspects were arrested over the weekend for allegedly smuggling arms into South Africa through the border near the Komatipoort area in Mpumalanga.

Seven AK47 rifles, 180 rounds of ammunition and a Toyota Hilux double cab bakkie were recovered.

On Monday, the suspects will appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on charges of smuggling and dealing in illegal firearms.

Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says, “During crime intelligence tactical operation which compromised of various disciplines of the SAPS arrested two suspects aged 17 and 35 for allegedly smuggling firearms into South Africa through the border near Komatipoort. When the suspects were confronted it emerged that they were intending to sell firearms.”
