A new international feature film in which Hollywood actor, Forest Whitaker, portrays Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during the time of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will hit South African cinemas early next month.

Acclaimed English/French director, Roland Joffé’s picture is titled, “The Forgiven” and also features Australian actor, Eric Bana, as convicted murderer, Piet Blomfeld.

The movie is based on Michael Ashton’s play, “The Archbishop and the anti-Christ”, and is a fictionalised account of the clergyman’s efforts as head of the TRC to confront the country’s dark past in an attempt to heal and unite it.

The movie was shot in and around Cape Town, including inside the dangerous Pollsmoor Maximum Security prison.

It boasts local stars such as Jeff Gum, Morné Visser and Thandi Makhubele.

Whitaker, who also worked on the 2013 Hollywood film, “City of Violence”, in the Mother City, confessed that playing the Archbishop was one of the biggest challenges of his career.
