The family of Zimbabwean veteran opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai say they were at his bedside over the past week.

He died in Johannesburg on Wednesday at the age of 65 after a long battle with colon cancer.

He was diagnosed with the disease in 2016 and had been undergoing regular treatment in South Africa.

Tsvangirai founded the Movement for Democratic Change party in 1999 and became former President Robert Mugabe’s fiercest opponent, upsetting his hold on power by beating Mugabe by 6% of the vote in the historic 2008 elections.

His brother, Collins says:” It’s unfortunate to the family and to the nation at large at the passing of Dr Rechard Morgan Tsvingirai. It with great sadness that he had been battling cancer for such a long time but now it has come to pass that he is no more. I hope and believe he has rested.”

Arrangements have been made to take him home, says his brother.
