In a letter seen by SABC News written by Trump to Kim Jong-un, the US leader says that based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed by the North Korean leader, it would be inappropriate to proceed with the 12 June meeting as planned.

The official cancellation comes as no surprise given the open hostility shown by the leadership of North Korea in recent days.

Particularly brimming at suggestions that Pyongyang had to completely denuclearize before economic sanctions were lifted and comparisons by US Vice President Mike Pence likening North Korea , a nuclear weapons state , to Libya where former leader Muammar Gaddafi gave up an unfinished nuclear development programme only to be killed after an intervention by NATO in his own country.

The letter from Trump to Kim calls the Summit off to the “detriment of the world” while pointing out that while the North Korean leader talks about his nuclear capabilities, that the United States nuclear weapons cache is quote “so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used”. The President adds that someday he looks forward to meeting Kim, highlighting that it’s only dialogue that matters.
