President Jacob Zuma has joined scores of prominent South Africans in sending messages of condolence to the family of the late musician Robbie Malinga.
The 49 year old died on Christmas Day. He had been in and out of Hospital since June after he was diagnosed with anaemia.
“President Jacob Zuma has extended his heartfelt condolences to the passing of veteran musician Robbie Malinga. The president has said the country is saddened by the loss of such a talented artist. It is indeed a huge loss for South Africa and the music industry as a whole. The President has said the country is with his family in thought during this trying period,” says Presidential Spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga.
The SABC has also expressed its sadness at the passing of Malinga.
“We are very much shocked to hear about the passing of Malinga. He is one of these people who have contributed a lot in entertaining the South Africans through our radio stations and our television channels. Our listeners through the country will miss him but will always remember him through his music. We have honoured him when he was still alive to say he is the very best and we are very grateful for that,” says spokesperson for the public broadcaster, Kaizer Kganyago.
Gauteng Sport MEC, Faith Mazibuko, has described legendary music producer and artist Robbie Malinga as the Luther Vandross of South Africa. Mazibuko says Malinga was the go to producer for many musicians in the country and he helped take their careers forward.
She says his death is a huge loss to the music industry , especially the Afro-pop sound. Mazibuko has visited Malinga’s Fourways home north of Johannesburg.
“We really offer our deepest condolences on behalf of the residents of Gauteng but most of all on behalf of music lovers. Robbie was a legend, a veteran; he was one of those people who made sure that the music industry becomes a shining light especially amongst our young people including those in the developmental programmes and the artists. May his soul rest in peace.”
