Tributes continue to flow for one of South Africa’s top diplomats George Nene. Nene was one of South Africa’s best diplomatic exports.

He chaired the South African Association of Former Ambassadors. He served with distinction in Nigeria and Switzerland. Nene also represented South Africa at the United Nations.

Nene was in the trenches during the anti-apartheid struggle.

He was pivotal in crafting South Africa’s foreign policy and strengthening the Department of International Affairs.

President Cyril Ramaphosa also sent condolences to the family.

Nene was a minefield of information and experience which he brought to international relations

Former ambassador Welile Nhlapho say: “That is why we came to an agreement that we need to form an association of ambassadors so that we can have a proper documentation and understanding of the evolution of our foreign policy.”

Seasoned diplomats are feeling the loss and already miss his experience and wisdom.

The African National Congress (ANC) had built a cadreship of diplomats and Nene was at its apex. A former Defence Force chief says Nene was a true son of the soil.

Details of the memorial service and funeral will be communicated in the week.
