The National Department of Transport has for the first time awarded traffic officers and their respective provincial departments trophies and certificates of excellence for their outstanding performance during the festive season’s traffic safety campaigns.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula and Transport MEC’s from various provinces presented the awards during the release of the 2019/2020 Festive Season Road Accidents Statistics in Pretoria.

The number of road fatalities and injuries over the past festive season has dropped by 10% compared to the previous year.
1 617 fatalities have been recorded out of the 1 390 crashes.
Mbalula says the officers should be commended.
“These are no-nonsense kind of traffic officers who don’t take ‘cool drink’ (could be in the form of bribery money), who understand that safety on the roads is not negotiable. Officer Sithole Hlophe from KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate, for consistent performance on drunk and driving operations. This officer arrested 109 motorists for drunk and driving over the festive season.”
I would also like to remind you all that the Arrive Alive campaign continues. Remember that we have committed ourselves to a 365 day 24/7 road safety programme and we must sustain this success every day. https://t.co/HbDeDvFwWM pic.twitter.com/IDGCLkzwQt
