A traffic official has been arrested in Potchefstroom in the North West for allegedly soliciting bribes from motorists on the N12 route between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom.

The official was arrested by the Hawks on Tuesday morning at the provincial traffic offices.

North West Hawks spokesperson Tlangelani Rikhotso says their investigation shows the suspect has committed the crimes over a period of time.

Rikhotso says he would allegedly stop luxury vehicles on the N12 and claim that the drivers were driving above the speed limit.

He would tell them that if they do not pay him, they would get arrested.

The drivers would give him the money out of fear.

The official will appear at the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court where he will face a charge of fraud.
