Former President Kgalema Motlanthe says the recommendations made by the high-level panel on the land reform programme have been misrepresented by traditional leaders.

The panel, which Motlanthe chaired, has recommended that the Ingonyama Trust Act be repealed.

The Act gives the Trust administrative authority over 2.8 million hectares of land in KwaZulu-Natal.

Last week, King Goodwill Zwelithini of the Amazulu attacked Motlanthe and the ANC at his imbizo in Ulundi and warned of a war if the land under the Trust was taken.

In an exclusive interview with the SABC, Motlanthe defended the panel report.

He says: “It’s misinformation, the recommendation of the high level panel is that land must be given to the people including those who live within the jurisdiction of traditional leaders.

“But they are now saying the recommendation is that land must be taken away from the people. Which land can be taken away from people who don’t possess the land. The truth is the opposite that land must be given to the people,” adds Motlanthe.
