The 2019 Currie Cup kicks off on the 12th of July with the first game between Cell C Sharks and Tafel Lager Griquas at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium in Durban. The Toyota Cheetahs will start their campaign on the 19th of July away to the Vodacom Blue Bulls at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Cheetahs announced a new coach in Hawies Fourie, who will only take over from the 1st of September.

Current coach Franco Smith will lead the side in the Currie Cup campaign before leaving for Italy in January next year where he will coach the Italian national side.

Fourie, who was head coach at Stellenbosch says it is an important Currie Cup. This will be the first time in two years that the Guinness Pro 14 and Currie Cup would be overlapping allowing the Cheetahs to have their best players available.

Cheetahs Managing Director Harold Verster shares the team’s anticipation. As announced in April this year the Cheetahs finalised and signed 23 player contracts.

Names like Benhard Janse van Rensburg from the Sharks and Louis Fouche from the Kubota Spears in Japan have been added. Verster explains the process. Report by Tshenolo Meruti
