Police have opened an inquest docket after a one-year-old toddler was allegedly electrocuted while playing outside the yard in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg.

According to police, the mother was busy inside the house while the child was playing outside at their home at the Silvercity Informal settlement.

Police say when the mother went outside to check on the child, she found her lying motionless next to loose electric wires.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson, Linkie Lefakane says the mother rushed to the clinic where the child was pronounced dead on arrival.

She says investigations to determine the cause of death are continuing.

Illegal connection of electricity is a concern in Bekkersdal and innocent people are affected on a daily basis.
