United States (US) Secretary of state Rex Tillerson will urge Kenya’s main political opponents to hold dialogue to end an on-going political impasse.

US acting assistant secretary of state for African affairs Donald Yamamoto said during his meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, Tillerson will seek to push for talks between Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga who have failed to agree on the way forward for the country since October’s repeat elections.

Odinga was sworn in as a people’s president in a mock swearing ceremony that has seen the government clamp on the opposition.

Yamamoto said the standoff is not good for Kenya’s economic development. Tillerson begins a weeklong tour of Africa on Tuesday.
