The Deputy President of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), Maulana Abdul-Khaliq Allie, says tighter security is needed at places of worship across the country.
He was reacting to the deadly attack on a mosque in Malmesbury in the Swartland on Thursday morning.
Two men were fatally wounded during the stabbing attack. Their attacker was shot dead by the police.
Maulana Abdul-Khaliq Allie says all places of worship are sacred.
“The leadership of the Muslim Judicial Council will be issuing guidelines to the Imams. With regard to the security, it speaks to a matter that we perhaps should be able to investigate how we deal with it. But the reality of the situation is, we require tighter security perhaps around places of worship across the country, and not only for the Muslim community.”
Malmesbury police were called out to a local mosque and found two people stabbed to death and several injured. The suspect, believed to be in his thirties and armed with a knife was still on the scene – and charged at the police who tried to persuade him to hand himself over. He ignored the calls and tried to attack police. He was shot and killed in the process. His death will be investigated by IPID.
