Tight security ahead of Kenyatta inauguration

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Thousands of Kenyans have started gathering at the Kasarani stadium in Nairobi ahead of the swearing in of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Security has been heightened in and around the stadium with thousands of uniformed officers patrolling Nairobi city streets.

Kenyatta is set to be sworn in for his second and final term.

He will take the oath of office following two presidential elections and two election petitions.

The Supreme Court cleared the way for his inauguration after dismissing two petitions filed to challenge Kenyatta’s victory.

Close to 20 heads of state are expected at the event with International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane representing President Jacob Zuma.

Kenyatta won with 98% of the votes cast. Voter turn out was below 40%.

The opposition has said Kenyatta’s victory is not legitimate despite having been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The opposition will on Tuesday hold a parallel rally, a memorial service for those killed during protests called by the opposition to demand electoral reforms. Police have outlawed Tuesday’s protests.
