Reading Time: 2 minutes

South Africa has been one of the top achieving countries at the African Youth Chess Championships over the last 10 years, and this year was no exception.

Three Nelson Mandela Bay Chess players have made their mark on the international stage in Egypt this year.

Chess is a fast growing sporting code in South Africa, despite limited resources and funding.

The Chess Federation in South Africa is aiming at growing the sport in township schools in an attempt to get pupils off the streets.

Sarah Kruger and brothers Neathan and Noah Peter are no strangers to accolades. They all received honours from the World Chess Federation due to their commitment and dedication to the sporting code.

Eight year-old Noah is well travelled and has represented South Africa in countries such as Sri Lanka and Brazil.

He won his age group in Egypt and has already qualified for the World Cadet tournament in Italy which is highly regarded on the global chess calendar.

He was also number one in his age group on the continent between 2015 and 2016.

They are all looking to qualify for the Commonwealth Games to be staged in India next year.

Next in their sights is the upcoming SA Junior Chess Championships in Johannesburg where 87 Nelson Mandela Bay chess players from various age groups will participate.
