Three more suspected Rolex Gang members arrested

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police hope to make further inroads into the so-called Rolex Gang after arresting three more suspected members, following a shoot-out on the R25 in Modderfontein, east of Johannesburg, on Tuesday afternoon.

In February this year, three other members of the Rolex Gang – which targets people who have just bought valuable items – were sentenced to a total of over 600 years in prison.

The police’s Brenda Muridili explains how a multidisciplinary law enforcement task team caught the three suspects in Modderfontein on Tuesday.

“This integrated team had been holding surveillance on the movements of the suspects since the hijacking of a vehicle in Alexandra last month. When the suspects realised they had been cornered, they started shooting at the team and police responded, with one suspect injured during the shootout. The vehicle, two handguns with ammunition and other items were seized. Combatting car hijacking as a category of the trio crimes is one of our top priorities.  This collaborative effort of various law enforcement agencies will be going forward be incorporated in the normalisation approach.”
