30 municipalities face water cuts over outstanding debts

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Water and Sanitation Department has threatened to cut water supply to 30 municipalities across the country in two weeks’ time.

The department says it is owed more than R10-billion in outstanding debts.

It says it has been negotiating with the municipalities for the past two years to pay its bulk water debt.

The department says the 30 municipalities have not honoured payment agreements and this has left them with no choice but to switch off the taps.

It says currently 59 courts summonses have been issued and 121 municipalities are involved in legal collection processes but this has not helped.

The taps could be closed on December 8.
