South African embassies across the world have begun to receive election material for the upcoming national vote.

The diplomatic missions will host elections for South Africans living abroad on April 27. Nearly 30 000 people have registered to vote overseas.

The Independent Electoral Commission(IEC) says this year’s registration of expat voters hit record numbers.

Of the 30 000 registered voters, 29 334 have been approved to cast their votes at foreign missions.

South Africa is among the few countries on the continent that makes provision for its citizens to be able to cast their ballot outside the country.

Meanwhile, the SADC Election Observer team has arrived in South Africa and has begun meeting with political parties.

So far parties they have met with, include the ANC and the EFF.
