Thousands to miss first school day

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Thousands of learners across the country will miss the first few days of the new school year due to late registrations.

Many parents in Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo are still searching for places for their children, in particular in urban schools.

Many kids are still on the waiting list.

According to the Department of Education in Mpumalanga, the challenge is mostly in urban areas.

Education MEC Reginah Mhaule says the relocation of parents to other towns for work-related reasons and also parents that prefer urban over rural schools are contributing factors.

Mhaule advises parents who still have children on the waiting list to contact the nearest circuit office.

She adds that the department is ready for teaching and learning on the first day of school in most schools in the province.

Limpopo Education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe Polokwane is the hardest hit with admission challenges.

Over 28 000 learners in Gauteng have still not been placed.

Provincial Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says this is because parents are not happy with the schools the department has allocated to their children.

Lesufi says they have received over 400 000 new applications since last week.

The Free State Education Department says every effort has been made for a successful re-opening of schools for the 2018 academic year.

Spokesperson Howard Ndaba says work books and all learning and teaching material have been delivered.
