Thousands expected to attend Mam Winnie’s funeral

Thousands of people, including local and international dignitaries, are expected to attend struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral service at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Her funeral service will start at her home in Orlando West, Soweto at around seven, then it will then proceed to the Orlando Stadium.

Foreign and local dignitaries including United States civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson, American religious leader Louis Farakhan and supermodel Naomi Campbell are expected to attend.

She will be buried in Fourways north of Johannesburg later on Saturday afternoon.

Mam Winnie’s funeral service will start with a sermon at the family house before proceeding to Orlando Stadium.

Shuttle services have been bringing mourners from around Gauteng since 4am with the service due to begin at 9am.

Her daughters, Zenani Mandela-Dlamini and Zindzi Mandela, EFF’s Julius Malema and ANC Women’s League president Bathabile Dlamini are among those expected to pay tribute.

The ANC tribute will be given by NEC member Fikile Mbalula with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the eulogy.

From the continent, Namibian President Hage Geingob and Dennis Sassou Nguesso of Congo-Brazaville are billed to speak.
