Thousands of horse enthusiasts descended on a small village in Nkandla for an equine extravaganza. The annual Nkandla May Horse Racing Event focused on youth development and economic growth in the area.

Philani Zungu a jockey says: “We wish to receive more government sponsored games so we can be able to buy our horses’ food and medicine because it’s very expensive.”

And there are also economic spin-offs for local businesses.

“We benefit a lot from the Nkandla May and if we had it our way we would want it to happen four times a year,” says an entrepreneur.

“I have six nieces in university and they depend on me so selling at the event helps me support them financially,” says another entrepreneur.

There are also tourism benefits.

Thami Ntuli a Nkandla Mayor says: “Either than having races there are jockeys and they are improving their talents. We aspire to see them competing at the Durban July. This event helps us promote our area our town is now receiving more investors who want to come here and invest in Nkandla because of such activities.”

Local government says the event will help develop surrounding communities.
