Thembelihle residents take to streets over housing

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Protesting residents at the Thembelihle informal settlement are stoning passing vehicles on the M10 in Lenasia, in the south of Johannesburg.

The residents are demanding housing and electricity.

With the M10 completely closed, motorists are advised to avoid the road just outside the Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital.

They have blocked off the road with burning tyres and rocks.

Only one police vehicle is stationed at the scene.

Residents claim they are tired of government’s empty promises.

They say their living conditions are unbearable as there’s no proper sanitation or electricity in the informal settlement.

This is one of many protests which have taken place in the area over the past few years.
