Themba Maseko to testify at State Capture Inquiry

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The legal team of the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture has confirmed that former head of Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS) Themba Maseko will testify before the commission on Wednesday morning.

The commission sitting in Parktown Johannesburg has been hearing allegations that outsiders, mainly the Gupta family, influenced former president Jacob Zuma in the appointment of ministers.

Maseko will present his evidence and is the only person who directly implicates former President Jacob Zuma.

However, former ANC Member of Parliament Vytjie Mentor will take the stand before Maseko and is set to wrap up her testimony.

Maseko alleges that he received a phone call from Zuma in 2010, asking him to aid the Gupta brothers with placing government advertisements in the Gupta-linked New Age newspaper.

Maseko was interviewed by former public protector Thuli Madonsela while compiling the State of Capture Report.

He also told Madonsela that Ajay Gupta had threatened to have him sorted out should he not cooperate with his demand.

Soon after, Maseko was dismissed from his position and then replaced by Mzwanele Manyi in 2011.
