Textbook saga will be investigated

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela says her office is currently investigating three cases in connection with the Limpopo text book scandal.
Madonsela says textbook issues are also being investigated in Gauteng and the Free State. She has also received complaints from the Eastern Cape.
Addressing a breakfast meeting of the SABC and the New Age newspaper at Midrand north of Johannesburg, Madonsela says they want to ensure this does not happen again: “We have now written to the Department of Education to say from a systemic point of view, what has been done now, what mechanisms are in place to ensure that its clear what books should be delivered to whom by what time and for this year, we want them to give us an indication what has been the level of compliance in all nine provinces.”
We want the department to give us an indication of what has been the level of compliance in all provinces. Madonsela says last year alone, her office investigated 27 000 cases including more than 700 complex cases. She says her office came late into the textbook saga and found that government had appointed task teams to investigate.
She also says there are some informal complaints about schools in the Eastern Cape that do not have enough teachers. “We want the department to give us an indication of what has been the level of compliance in all provinces this year and what mechanisms are in place to make sure that these problems do not happen again next year.”
Madonsela says depending on the outcomes of the investigations, she will indicate to the department what should be done to remedy the situation. – additional report by Sapa
