Teachers can’t be blamed for department failures: Sadtu

Teacher union South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in KwaZulu-Natal says principals cannot be blamed for the failures of the Department of Education in such things as lack of adequate learning materials and teacher shortages.

Provincial Sadtu Secretary Nomarashiya Caluza told the media in Durban that teachers are made to do work that is beyond their work load.

Caluza says educators value the enhancement of teaching and learning more than extra work like distribution of sanitary towels to teenage girls.

“We told the Head of Department that principals, teachers and schools in general are no longer in need of these sanitary towels. We told the HoD that schools now lack space to keep these sanitary towels.”

“We reminded the HoD that schools need delivery of resources to enhance teaching and learning. As a serious concern Sadtu raised the growing budget of the sanitary towels – when norms and standard and norms could not be paid to schools,” says Caluza.
