Taxi strike leaves Soweto commuters stranded

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Minibus-taxi commuters have been severely affected in Soweto.

This as the National Taxi Association embarked on a national strike on Wednesday morning.

Thousands of taxi operators affiliated to the NTA will march to the offices of the Transport Department in the Pretoria CBD to deliver their memorandum before moving to the Union Buildings to deliver a second one.

Their grievances include challenges in the taxi industry such as subsidies‚ dedicated taxi lanes‚ the registration of taxi-operators and Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences.

At this time on a weekday morning, the streets of Soweto are normally packed with minibus taxis.

However, only a handful of taxis can be seen in the morning.

These taxis are undoubtedly affiliated to the South African Nation Taxi Council (Santaco), who have distanced themselves from the strike.

The protest March comes as the NTA claims that their grievances have fell in deaf ears for far too long.

SABC Reporter Sashin Naidoo gives an update on the taxi strike in Soweto and how thousands of commuters have expressed frustration due to difficulties in getting to school and work.
