Taxi drivers urged to respect rules of road

The South African National Taxi Organisation (Santaco) in KwaZulu-Natal has reiterated its call on taxi drivers to respect the rules of the road.

Spokesperson Sfiso Shangase says they are working with the government’s campaign called Hlokomela, which is aimed at reducing road accidents.

Shangase says the structure is responsible for checking the vehicles road worthiness before they leave the ranks with passengers.

He encouraged all taxi operators and owners to be ambassadors of safety on the roads.

However, Shangase has expressed concern about the more than 20 people who died on KwaZulu-Natal roads since the beginning of the Easter weekend.

“It is with great regret that we have lost more than 20 lives within the short space of time of the Easter holidays. But as Santaco, we are still reiterating the message that we should not focus on saying there are Easter carnages taking place. People should change their attitudes especially our drivers and over and above we are insisting that people should utilise the vehicles that are roadworthy. We have got a campaign called Hlokomela which has been intensified. Regional ambassadors are all over even our leadership is out there.”
