Higher Education Minister Naledi Pandor has directed the department to identify students who are blocked from registering for their final year due to outstanding debt.
The majority of students at Wits University are continuing with their lectures but about 40 others are demonstrating over historic debt and the shortage of accommodation.
Some NSFAS applicants whose applications were placed on review and then rejected are accusing the student financial aid scheme of unfair treatment.
The first day of registration at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein is progressing smoothly.
Students from UJ who applied for the NSFAS say the university still requires them to pay registration fees.
