Residents of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, have begun blockading entrances and exits of the township as part of the so-called total shutdown of the area on Wednesday.
The Alexandra Shutdown Committee says there will be a complete shutdown of the township on Wednesday. This follows Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s promise to rebuild illegal structures which were demolished in the township, north of Johannesburg.
Political analyst, Somadoda Fikeni, says queue jumping may become an issue of contention should the City of Johannesburg forge ahead with their decision to rebuild shacks along the Jukskei River in Alexandra.
Alexandra residents have vowed to oppose the rebuilding of structures which were demolished last Friday in the township, north of Johannesburg.
