The Alexandra Shutdown Committee says there will be a complete shutdown of the township on Wednesday. This follows Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s promise to rebuild illegal structures which were demolished in the township, north of Johannesburg.
The Human Rights Commission in Gauteng will convene an inquiry next Thursday to find a solution to the issues plaguing residents at the Alexandra township north of Johannesburg.
The South African Federation of Trade Union (SAFTU) says it is fully behind the Alexandra protests and has called on residents in other townships across the country to join the demonstrations.
The Alexandra Shutdown movement will on Tuesday convene to plan for another shutdown of the area expected to take place sometime this week.
