Cape Town authorities say one of the men who died on Monday’s incident on Table Mountain was of Asian descent. The other deceased was a well-known male hiking guide from the city.

About 500 people, including overseas’ tourists, were stranded on the mountain during a dramatic rescue and recovery of the fallen climbers overnight. One of the cable cars was used in the difficult operation.

All the stranded tourists have been brought down late last night. The bodies of the tour guide and the foreign tourist have been recovered and a third person, a woman also of Asian origin, has been taken to hospital.

“I believe of Asian descent. The male died of the couple and the guide, the local guide died in the incident yesterday afternoon. It has also now Become clear that they were not abseiling. They were actually rock climbing when the incident occurred. The leader of the climbing expedition dislodged a rock and that put in motion on the whole accident which led to his death him being killed and the male visitor being killed,” said SANPARKS spokesperson, Merle Collins.
