Table Mountain Park confirms Bird Flu outbreak

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Table Mountain National Park has confirmed an outbreak of Bird Flu in the penguin colony at Boulders in the Cape Peninsula.

Table Mountain management says state veterinarians conducted tests for the H5N8 strain of Avian Flu on the bird colony in question.

They have alerted people in the domestic poultry industry, for which the virus poses a real threat. The virus is, however, a very low risk to humans.

Table Mountain National Park says people have been barred from entering the main breeding area of the Boulders colony near Simon’s Town and are monitoring the situation closely, with more tests expected to be carried out.
