‘Wings for Life’ raises funds for spinal cord injury research

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Director of One Chance At Life (Ocal), Sandile Mkhize says, “The Wings for Life World Run” is open to everyone whether they are able bodied runners or people in wheelchairs.

Ocal is a Non-Governmental Organisation which is committed to mobilising more & diverse support towards the growing needs of DifferentlyAbled Persons and is in partnership with the Wings for Life World Run.

The event which is run simultaneously around the world to raise funds for spinal cord injury research will return to Tshwane once again on the 6th of May.

Mkhize lost control of his motorbike in 2013, breaking his back in three places and rendering him a T5 paraplegic. His accident taught him the importance of purpose, and shortly after meeting the founder of Ocal at his first World Run in 2016, he became the director.

“Low income countries don’t necessarily have access to get financial means to get the care they need if they get a spinal cord injury, therefore you find people get unnecessary complications, people get sick and some end up dying when they don’t get proper care.”

Mkhize says the entry fee for the South African race is R175 and all the money will go towards  spinal cord injury research.
